Vampyrella

Meet Vampyrella, the vampire amoeba with a taste for algae! This tiny freshwater predator may not have fangs, but its feeding habits are worthy of its spooky nickname.

Vampyrella attaches itself to algal cells, dissolves a hole in the cell wall and slurps out the nutritious contents inside. First described in 1865, this fascinating single-celled organism gives scientists a glimpse into the hidden world of microscopic predators and prey.

Perfect for microbiologists, biology students, teachers, science lovers and anyone who likes their microbes with a slightly spooky side. Fortunately, this vampire only wants your algae!
